At Lush, we use a very fine clean grade of sand so it’s safe to use on the skin. Our UK manufacturing sites* use different suppliers depending on availability, but the sand always comes from the UK. It is play pit sand, which means that it's carefully screened for debris and pollutants.

Sand is formed when rocks are broken down into small particles through the wear and tear of air, ice and water. It accumulates on beaches, deserts and at the mouths of mountain canyons. It’s blown by the wind, creates migrating dunes, and forms shapes. All sand contains small amounts of semi-precious minerals, including garnet, tourmaline and topaz. Very pure varieties are used in glassmaking as a source of silica.
