Japan wax is a vegetable wax made from the berries and stems of the Rhus succedanea tree. First, a decoction is made, then the paste is left under the sun to dry and blanch.

Japan wax is distinctive for its low fatty acid content, resulting in a more viscous texture than many other waxes. It helps thicken formulations and gives blends a smooth, malleable texture.

It has been used by sumo wrestlers and geishas for centuries to shape and maintain hairstyles. Today, it is still commonly used in haircare products for the same purpose.
